Jordan Science and Environment
Mining and Metal Production Through the Ages This volume grew out of the proceedings of an international conference hosted by The British Museum in 1995, augmented by the inclusion of participants' more recent work and additional contributions by other leading experts in the field. Among the various topics are the early development of copper smelting technology as exemplified at Feinan, Jordan, the recognition of Bronze Age copper mining in the British Isles; and the discover of Bronze Age tin mining and processing at Kestel and Goltepe in Turkey. The excavation of ancient smelting sites, long confined to Europe and the Near East, is now occurring in other parts of the world, as shown by reports on copper smelting in China and South Africa. More complex extraction processes include the treatment of silver-rich jarosite ores, crucible processes, and the production of brass by direct processes. The emphasis throughout the volume is on the technology of the processes, but other aspects are also considered, including the mineralogy of the ores likely to have been used in the past, the effects of extractive metallurgy on the environment, and the long-term interaction of mining technology with local communities.
Epicurian Simplicity by Stephanie Mills, When an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically. This idea, known as the "Precautionary Principle, " is seen by environmentalists and public health experts as the key to protecting ecological and human health. In January 1998, the Science and Environmmental Health Network convened an international group of scientists, researchers, environmentalists, academics, and labor representatives to discuss ways of incorporating the precautionary approach into environmental and public health decision-making. Known as the Wingspread Conference on Implementing the Precautionary Principle, the workshop focused on understanding the contexts under which the principle developed, its basis, and how it could be implemented. Protecting Public Health and the Environment is an outgrowth of that conference. The book: describes the history, specific content, and scientific and philosophical foundations of the principle of precautionary action explains the functions of the principle in activities as diverse as agriculture and manufacturing explains how to know when precautionary action is needed and who decides what action will (or will not) be taken attempts to show how the burden of proof of environmental harm can be shifted to proponents of a potentially hazardous activity provides specific structures and mechanisms for implementing the precautionary principl. Throughout, contributors focus on the difficult questions of implementation and fundamental change required to support a more precautionary approach to environmental and public health hazards.Among the contributors are David Ozonoff, Nicholas Ashford, Ted Schettler, Robert Costanza, Ken Geiser, Anderw Jordan, and others.
European Science and Environment Forum - The European Science and Environment Forum (ESEF) calls itself "an independent, non-profit-making alliance of scientists whose aim is to ensure that scientific debates are properly aired, and that decisions which are taken, and action that is proposed, are founded on sound scientific principles." Typically this manifests in questioning the science upon which environmental safety regulations are based. Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science - The Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science(CEFAS) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom government department the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). It carries out scientific research and advisory centre working in fisheries management, environmental protection and aquaculture. Navigational Aids for the History of Science, Technology, and the Environment Project - The Navigational Aids for the History of Science, Technology, and the Environment Project (NAHSTE) is an effort by the University of Edinburgh and the Research Support Libraries Programme (RSLP) to make manuscripts and other documents available on the Web. Environmental science - Environmental science is the study of the interactions between biological components of the environment and the physical, chemical components; with a focus on pollution and degradation of the environment related mainly due to human activities; and the impact on the environment to biodiversity and sustainability from local and global development.
